Welcome
Welcome to the Ohio Association of Independent Title Agents (OAITA) website. We appreciate your interest in our organization and hope that you find our site informative and helpful. We want to take the opportunity to supply you with information about our organization.

What is OAITA?

OAITA is an Ohio non-profit corporation consisting of independent title insurance agents across Ohio who share a common philosophy about the value of independence and autonomy in real estate transactions. While there are organizations within Ohio and across the country that already cater to the title insurance industry, OAITA is the only organization dedicated solely to the concerns of the independent title insurance agency/agent.

What does OAITA stand for?

  1. OAITA members believe that kickbacks and referral schemes between title agents and their referral partners -- lenders, mortgage brokers, realtors and builders -- have undermined the value of title insurance in Ohio. Instead, OAITA members are those title insurance agents who have agreed not to engage in those business practices in order to obtain title insurance business.

  2. OAITA members do not engage in or otherwise promote affiliated business arrangements (AfBAs). AfBAs are joint business ventures that are designed primarily for the purpose of distributing the profits from title insurance business -- including title insurance commissions -- between an AfBA title agency and its referral partners (i.e. banks, mortgage brokers, realtors, and builders). Instead, OAITA members operate as independent business entities, separate and distinct from those that send them their real estate settlement business. Unlike AfBAs, the ultimate consuming public can be assured that an OAITA member title agency or title agent has not been pressured by its referral partners to close a real estate transaction in order to pay the referral partners back for steering the deal through an AfBA title agency or agent.

  3. OAITA members believe that truly independent title agents and agencies help make title insurance costs more competitive, help lower title insurance claims, and help protect the ultimate consuming public from real estate-related litigation.

  4. OAITA members believe that free market capitalism is the best path to consumer prosperity!

What is OAITA doing for independent title agents and the ultimate consuming public?

We are actively involved in helping to shape policy regarding title insurance in Ohio. We are participating in private policy change by pursuing litigation to help reinforce existing Ohio law regarding title insurance. We are also participating in public policy change by contacting state and local representatives to gain their support for favorable initiatives relative to the independent title insurance movement in Ohio. We are convening an annual meeting in September to address important issues within the industry and combining our resources to make sure that independent title insurance agents do not lose their place at the title insurance table.
